Artificial Intelligence in Personalised Learning in The Higher Education Context: A Systematic Literature Review

Tianjiao Xu(Shandong Huayu University of Technology, Dezhou, Shandong)

Abstract

AbstractThis systematic analysis examines the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education, emphasizing the enhancement of Personalised Learning Pathways (PLPs). Employing the PRISMA technique, 18 papers published since 2022 were examined to classify AI applications into three categories: classification of AI technology, effects on student learning experiences and outcomes, and disciplinary and contextual variations. The results underscore the significant impact of generative AI (GenAI), deep learning (DL), and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) in enhancing engagement, motivation, and autonomy, especially in STEM fields. Nonetheless, research deficiencies persist, encompassing restricted utilization in the humanities, inadequate longitudinal evaluation, and ethical concerns involving algorithmic bias and data privacy. This review emphasizes the revolutionary capabilities of AI and offers practical suggestions for enhancing interdisciplinary applications and personalized educational methods. The findings enhance the current body of knowledge by offering a thorough and clear overview of recent developments and highlighting objectives for future research.
