A Study on Environmental Justice Themes in American Environmental Literature

Abstract

Environmental justice is now among America's most urgent issues in its environmental literature for the last few decades. This essay analyzes this literary tradition by giving voice to environmental racism, toxic exposure, and Indigenous ecological wisdom. Using close reading and postcolonial ecocriticism we analyze both aspects; literary representations of racial and class inequality in toxic landscapes and the decolonial, forward-looking ethics found in Indigenous writing and climate fiction. We see that American environmental writing has evolved from traditional nature writing into a new form focused on justice connecting past harm with current struggles and future responsibility. Literature becomes an active agent rather than just a passive observer shaping our ecological ethics and inspiring us to take collective action.
