Jixia Academy: A Wonder in the History of Human Civilization

Abstract

In the Warring States Period, the ruler of the State of Qi founded the Jixia Academy in its capital Linzi. It was the earliest institution of higher education in Chinese history integrating educational, political, and academic functions, as well as the ideological and cultural center of the Warring States Period. It served as a cultural fertile ground where various schools of thought contended, promoted the integration and development of ideas, and nurtured new schools of thought. It was also the forerunner of the doctoral system and the cradle of academic masters. Its inclusive, independent, and free academic spirit constitutes a precious spiritual and cultural heritage for both China and the world.
